Discover Kerala, a hidden gem in paradise!
Dreaming of far-away exotic countries? Travel with me to the majesty of the undulating hills of Munnar and the serenity of the pristine backwaters. In this blog post I’ll write about some parts of my trip in November 2012 that inspired my current collection, and explain why it’s such a wonderful hidden paradise!
I’ve never been to India before, though I was longing to discover this gem of a country! As I was travelling solo, I wanted to find a tour that offers culture trips combined with creative activities. After a long search, I found the perfect getaway, thanks to FRUI Holidays! I’ve always wanted to learn new skills in beautiful travel photography and Kerala seemed like the ideal exotic canvas!
THE BACKWATERS, NATURE'S BEAUTY and THE MALAYALI:
Walking through colourful villages hidden away in a green tropical forest was a feast for the eyes. You can just feel the energy flowing through its flowers and fauna. The sunlight was shining through them giving off playful beautiful patterns and shadows. An enchanting chaos.
One thing I noticed straight away, was how welcoming the Malayali were in the South Indian state of Kerala. Having visited a school run by nuns, the children were so adorable and happy to see us. How can anyone resist their laughter! We even spotted some people sporting ‘Movember‘ month!
Alappuzha (or Alleppey) is a city known as the "Venice of the East" by Lord Curzon, situated along Kerala’s enchanting lush tropical backwaters and canals. Experiencing a houseboat cruise along canals and observing everyday village life was culturally insightful and beautiful. In the olden days, the backwaters were an engine of life with incredibly evocative stories of adventure and where houseboats used to ship rice, spices and other goods between Kuttanad and the Cochin port. If Kerala is on your holiday destination list, be sure to include an overnight houseboat trip!
My various Alappuzha earrings reflect these experiences and inspirations through layered leaves combined with translucent green Amethysts and Chalcedony. Feel the light and tropical energy on your skin.
MUNNAR AND THE MAJESTIC TEA HILLS
After travelling through small towns, we finally arrived near Munnar in order to take a 5am old Jeep ride to Tea Hill plantation. A fun adventure when listening to tamil music on rocky dangerous paths. We had to hold on tight! Arriving at the top we had the chance to photograph a breathtaking sunrise over the vast hills. For once, waking up this early was worth it! You feel alive witnessing nature’s pure force and beauty. Hiking down the vast plains we were greeted with homemade tea and a tour of the old still-in-use tea factory.
Notice the strong linear lines and beautiful layout of the plantations. Organised Chaos. My Chayya ring reflects these through rows of leaves soldered together, forming a delicate but strong unity.
